The Emotions of War

War is accompanied by a whole range of emotional borderline situations, from initial enthusiasm for the war and war propaganda to grieving for the dead on a national and on a private scale.
Between those, there are multifaceted emotional experiences and intentions, such as love for the home country and the family left behind, hatred of the enemy, pride, honour and respect, fear and pain, loss and grief and also the longing for peace and reconciliation. It has been thus during the First World War, and in every other war.
The various emotional levels form the structural support that allows the respective contextualisation of the various groups of objects from the MEK collection. They will illustrate the various perspectives of the war and how these changed as a result of wartime experiences.
By approaching the issue through emotional levels, it is possible to explain war as a phenomenon of the past and also to develop points of reference and reflection levels for the present and for wars closer to our time.
The exhibition is based on the MEK's extensive stock of First World War related objects (copies of Der Deutsche Kriegsbilderbogen - 'Illustrated German War Sheets' -, vivat ribbons, sheet music, photographs, diaries, correspondence, everyday objects from wartime life), completed here and there with items on loan.
In terms of modern media, it will feature projected films and PC games.
